The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: News and Views Message Board

Jim, the issue that prompted all the controversy in this thread was alleged coerced recruitment by Federal troops, not whether the 5th Kansas Cavalry misbehaved. John responded to Doyle's allegation with this -- "Further, you imply that all Federal recruitment in the county was by intimidation, and that just can't be true."

As a matter of fact, John is correct, in that there are no documented cases of forced Federal recruitment in Arkansas that I am aware of. As a practical matter, I can't imagine any army adopting a policy of recruiting enemy aliens at gunpoint, and expecting them to be loyal, effective soldiers.

On the other hand, there are documented cases where Confederate deserters voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. service; that does not include prisoners of war who enlisted to obtain release from prison. One does not need to "project" one's bias figure this out. Some of those soldiers have spoken for themselves in their letters and postwar accounts, and in biographical sketches such as those in Goodspeed's histories.

For a simple statement of fact to be reacted to as an attack on "The Cause" reflects the zealotry you spoke about. Some people have a need apparently to publicly parade their zealotry. I don't have a problem with that in theory, but I must object when such posturing perpetuates myths on a history discussion board. I believe that our noble Confederate ancestors can stand on their own; they don't need myths or half-truths to justify the stand they took or the sacrifices they made.

I appreciate your efforts to get this board and the N&V board back to the business at hand.
