I am trying to get some information on the formation of the Yell Rifles. Various sources have them being formed at various times. Did Cleburne help form them? Most sources seem to agree that he did, but I have heard that he was a private and could not have formed the organization. Some say the Yell Rifles were formed in April 1861, some say in summer 1860, some say spring of 1861. Were they in Little Rock in February 1861 at the Little Rock Arsenal? If so how could they have been formed in April 1861? I have looked at Stonewall of West; Cleburne and His Command and A Meteor Shining Brightly as well as With Fire and Sword and Rugged and Sublime and other sources. Does anybody have any primary documentation regarding when this militia company formed? Thanks.
