Thanks for the support. I too have to make sure I can "document" why I am doing this for World History. Until the Ark Dept of Ed decided kids only need US Histrory in 5th grade and not again until 11th, I taught US and Ark History. There was no issue. Now I have been questioned about meeting standards etc by the boss, but we do cover US history of the time periods of these peoples lives, to include the war and westward migration etc. Plus, since the wonderful Dept of Ed dictates that I have 6 hours of inservice on Arkansas History then that clears me to conduct some learning on Ark, US history to go along with learning research skills. I started out teaching Earth Science and some Phys science as well and had huge portraits of Lee and Jackson in my classroom. I was questioned at least once a year on why did I have those up there if I taught science. My reply was first and foremost, I respected those two Americans more than most and wanted them up there. But Lee as president of Washington (and Lee) College and Jackson as a professor at VMI of what can be included in physical sciences today, qualify them for placement in a science classroom. I also had George Washington and Patrick Cleburne in there as well. Everyone pretty much left me alone after that. Then there were the questions when I taught that "by today's definition and standards, Abraham Licnoln was a racist". After a couple of calls I had to explain to the principal and after that, he handled all the calls and supported my efforts to show reality. Teaching is never boring and you never know when you have to support your statements and teaching.
