I thought that William A. Crawford was the Captain of Company "E" while he was with the 1st Arkansas Infantry. That He became a Lt. Colonel when he returned to Arkansas after his 12 month enlistement expired and was ordered to form Crawfords Battalion from the extra companies of volunteers and conscripts at White Sulphur Springs.
He lost that command when his Battalion was consolidated into Dawson's/Hardy's Regiment of the 19th and 24th Arkansas Infantry consolidated under the command of Col. Charles Dawson and Lt. Col. Wm. Hardy at Sulphur Springs in February 1863 after Arkansas Post.
