Any theories for why a burial location was chosen?

My 3xGreat Grandfather was mustered into Marmadukes 18th Arkansas Regiment on Dec. 18, 1861 in Little Rock, AR. He was a member of the "chain gang" from the peace society. It's been told that he died on Jan. 15, 1862 of measles and he's supposedly buried in a mass grave at the mills springs cemetery in Bell Station Kentucky. When I contacted the Mills Springs Battle Museum they couldn't understand why he'd be buried in that cemetery when he wasn't in the Mills Springs Battle. Does anyone have an idea on why he'd be buried there and why Marmadukes 18th Reg would be at that location at that time?

I'm also wondering how a date of death came to be unless it was passed down in the family this long since his son was in the same Regiment and survived the war. I've never seen a death record for him. Thanks for reading and responding.
