Re: Any theories for why a burial location was cho

Kevin, it is possible, as you suggested, that information about J.R.’s passing in KY was passed down and heavily distorted over the years. I checked all contributed family trees, as I am sure you have. Several give his death place as Bowling Green, KY, while many others give Searcy, White Co., AR. All give the date as January 1862. A few gave his death place as Bell’s Station, KY, and specifically gave the date as 15 Jan 1862. I note on Find-A-Grave that Julianna Dennis has provided three sources for you, so I won’t repeat them here.

Mills Springs was fought in January 1862, but Marmaduke was not there. He was however, at the Battle of Richmond, KY, fought in August of ’62. Richmond is in Madison County, which is one county away from where Mills Springs was fought (Wayne and Pulaski). It is possible that casualties from Richmond and Bell’s Station were taken down to Pulaski and Wayne Counties for burial (or re-interment), i.e., in an already established burial place, and that the death date of January 1862 is incorrect. I wouldn’t think that Bowling Green was the death “place,” because of its location in Warren County, which is a long way from Mills Springs, but he could have been removed and re-interred in the National Cemetery there, as suggested by Julianna.

You might contact the folks at Mills Springs to see if they are aware of any re-interments from other locations. I have found a picture of John Robert and Margaret Ann (Morris) Castleberry. If you do not have it, I’ll be glad to email a copy to you. Just need an address. Good luck.
