Re: Accounts of Fighting at Clarendon

Terry, just going from memory here, but Carr knew he couldnt catch Shelby, who was lining up in every strip of wood & offering battle only to retreat when pressed too hard. Shelby was just buying time to get his men & artillery across Bayou Deview. Carr wanted to catch him before he could get across & pin him against the bank, but with only 750 cavalry & the infantry who couldnt keep up, he knew it was about impossible. He requested from Steele a force to land further up the White to get in front of Shelby, or possibly a force from Helena to help out. Steele nixed the idea, then later complained to Gen. Canby about his officers not being able to catch Shelby. Here is an order of battle: 126th Ill. 106th Ill. 54th Ill. 18th Ill. 12th Mich. infantry. Battery D, 2nd Missouri Arty. 11th Mo. 8th Mo. & 9th Iowa cavalry. These were most likely battalions from these infantry regts. not
the full regtiments. In the O.R. Lt Col. Ezra Beardsley of the 126th Ill. & Capt. Charles Schaerff with the arty gave pretty good reports on their activities, as well as Carr's correspondence.
