Danny and Terry,

I have read the Union correspondence for the area around Devall's Bluff, little Rock, etc. very carefully for May, June, July and August 1864. The problem with the Union cavalry was a lot of horses were dying and - this is from memory - there was a forage problem. Check the OR and tell me if this is right.
