It's difficult to find a treatise on Quantrill and his men that doesn't rely on half-remembered anecdotes, and that doesn't present a stark black-or-white picture of him and his men. Researchers tend to portray him either as a sadistic villain, or a chivalrous Southern knight. As in most things, the truth usually lies somewhere in between.
