Thanks Bryan and Damon, I'm working on a letter from the Camp Hope/Camp Nelson area, and found a number of these men enlisting at Camp Hope between April and October of 1862. Since these dates are before Prairie Grove, they would have been joining the 28th Arkansas Inf. right. The 28th Arkansas Inf. being at Camp Hope/Camp Nelson, did any of the 28th Arkansas desert and walk out of camp with any of the other Arkansas Inf. units that fall.
Some of these men in the 28th/36th Arkansas Inf. later show up on the rolls of the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry US at Lewisburg, Arkansas. One of these men was Andrew J. Cowan (Cowen). His Father or an uncle lived near Camp Nelson and cared for a number of the sick soldiers there, late fall of 1862. In the letter he is mentioned only as Mr. Cowan.
Later in the war and Andrew J. Cowan is in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry US. Strange, I'm trying to figure this out. While working on Cowan, I came across Sanford V. Castleberry, he was also in the 28th Arkansas Inf. and later in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry US along with brother David Castleberry. Now the bad news I had a picture of Sanford and David in their Union uniforms in a gutta-percha case and gave it to a friend of mine, when he bought a Starr carbine off of me. Sanford and David both carried Starr carbines and Remington pistols. David deserted near Glass Village in 1864 and was captured a few months later near Flag, Arkansas, which was north of Clinton, Arkansas. His punishment was, he was made a company cook and could never leave camp. I'm now going to look and see if David Castleberry was ever in the Confederate army. Sorry to get off the subject and ramble.
