Just a reminded that the designation 39th Arkansas was probably not in use until well after the Prairie Grove Campaign.

Danny, it might be more accurate to say that the designation was authorized, but apparently never used by the brigade and regimental commanders. The three regiments commanded by Rector, Brooks and Adams, were designated by the State Military Board as the 35th, 34th, and 36th Arkansas Regiments, respectively; however, I can't find any record that these designations were used much before Prairie Grove. Instead, they were generally referred to, respectively, as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regiments, Northwest Division, District of Arkansas. As a result, they are sometimes misidentified as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Arkansas Infantry.
Some 20 or 30 years ago, I chanced upon a photocopy of several pages of a "Copy and Minute Book of the State Military Board," which lists the numerical designation and commander of most Arkansas regiments (an unknown number of pages are missing). This document, coupled with others, has enabled us to figure out the official designations, and to correlate them with the myriad of unofficial designations.
