There were two different men named Sterling Williams who served in Arkansas Confederate units.
Co. F, 1st Arkansas Volunteers, was an Izard County company organized for the defense of Pitman's Ferry and mustered into service at Pocahontas on November 20, 1861, for 30 days.
Co. I, 39th (Cocke's) Regiment Arkansas Infantry, was a Hot Spring County company organized for regular Confederate service and mustered into service at Rockport on June 9, 1862, for three years or the war. It was originally designated as Company B, but was redesignated as Company I as a result of a regimental reorganization on December 16, 1862.
