I was told a verbal legend that a large sum of money was onboard the Transport Mill Boy when she sank. I have found any records as to what it would be unless it was payroll for the 1st Nebraska Calvary. It got me to thinking, why within hours of notification of the loss of The Mill Boy a salvage operation was conducted during a storm and facing the hazards of a flooded river. Also. Field grade officer (Colonel R.R. Livingston) made serious charges of negligence but to my knowledge, no disciplinary action was taken and the US government paid the owners over $11,000 for the loss. I have seen accounts of where discharging soldiers were charged for minor items such as a rifle sling. The government lost the entire cargo and a caisson and an ammo box. Are there any records that might answer the questions?
