Re: Confederate Side Arms
In Response To: Confederate Side Arms ()

Herb - I would approach the subject by understanding that almost every type of available sidearm in the early 1860's was used at some point or another by the Confederate forces. It was a matter of using what was out there. Having said that, I would think that all would agree that the only style that was limited greatly, was any that used brass cased ammo - (Pinfires and Rimfires) Confederate's would not have much in the way of reliable sources of supply beyond blockade running and captured supplies. (and yes, there are always exceptions, but when speaking in more general terms . . . )

Confederate sidearms would usually come from any of 4 main sources.

Home grown manufacture - There are a ton of books focused on the topic of Confederate made revolvers. These were usually martial calibers (mostly .36 or .44 caliber) and frequently were based on the colt design.

Captured arms - The US government was a huge source of arms, either captured in pre-war State arsenals - or in the field. (heck, the 8th Ohio Cav was a one unit supply depot for rebs in the Shenadoah - they got captured so often) These were martial calibers - but could also include private sidearms and officer's weapons of different calibers.

A third area was imported arms - mostly English revolvers in martial calibers. Kerr, Tranter, and Adams were some names of note.

The last area was the basic functionality of the "Use what you brung" school. A hodgepodge of fine private purchased revolvers, to simple guns from home (that might have never killed anything but the fall hogs) were brought to the field. But, as others have said, they were not of much real use to infantry - or in reality - to anybody.

Hope that this is of interest - Gene
