The so called "Dresden Rifle" is the "Saechsisches Schuetzengewehr M 1850", a rifled musket introduced by the (German) Kingdom of Saxony first with a "tige" (that was later removed). It has a French style back action lock, a characteristic middle double (voltigeur) barrel band and curiously the same calibre as the US M 1855. Some were produced first in Saxony (Hartmann/Chemnitz and Olbernhau), the bulk was made at Malherbe in Liege/Belgium 1859(17750)because of production problems in Saxony. These were a bit shorter had more flat rifling than the original model and no "tige". Unfortunately Saxony as member of the German Federatin had to change calibre in 1857 to uniform with the other Southern states so they sold nearly the entire new production (around 29000) over Ladé/Paris to the Union. It is the only German import arm (beside the few Suhl produced M 1861) that was classified as First class because of the calibre identity.
