Marc,
My gg-grandfather and a couple of uncles in the 22nd Indiana Infantry were initially issued "Suhl" rifles. These guns were later replaced by Lorenz rifles, then in 1863 by Enfields and finally in 1864 by Springfields. Was the Lorenz a superior gun to the Suhl? I can understand the Enfield being a superior weapon to the Lorenz, but I don't understand why a regiment would go through the process of replacing all its weapons when the differences between the Suhl and the Lorenz, not to mention the Enfield and the Springfield, might be negligible. Got any idea how they made these decisions?
Thanks
Jim Martin
