The Arms & Equipment in the Civil War Message Board

weapons procuders

Here are my questions. They involve procedures involving Civil War weapons.

Would a soldier in general have been issued a specific weapon? Or would the company have been issued the weapons and handed then out to the men, to only have them taken back up after the battle was over ( and it was safe to do so)

If a soldier was seriously wounded or on extended sick call would he still be in possession of his weapon, or would it be held by his company?

What if a soldier was wounded and after recovery he transferred to another unit. Would he transfer with his weapon?

What was the view on soldiers carving their names into weapons, this tends to be very rare. Would that have been considered damage of government property?

Would their have been different procedures between Northern and Southern Forces?

Thanks in advance
