Thanks again to everyone for the help

Gerald, thanks for serving in Iraq. I was their from June of 2005 through June of 2006. That was certainly a profound moment in my life .

It is unfortunate that time machines have yet to be created ( well perhaps not such an unfortunate thing).

I do think in the end their is a strong possibility my weapon was used against the 54th Mass. on that faithful day, but I will never know.

I cannot imagine a scenario in which a commander would have a weapon floating around unused in a hospital while a major battle was going on. Simply does not make any sense to me.

Still an Ided Richmond is nothing to snear at, even if the guy might have been sitting out sick with his weapon on the day that I really wish he hadn't.

My understanding of Confederate weapons is this. Captured union weapons( particularly rifles) had to be turned in. From their the weapons might be immediately reissued ( if in good enough condition) , or they might be sent higher. Some of them would have been sent to the Richmond Armory where they were either repaired or cannibalized for parts.
