Thank you for the explanation. I am a novice at this and am confused about one thing. I assumed the 1861 Springfield (which my rifle looks like) was a YEAR 1861 model, whereas my rifle has 1851 nicely stamped or carved into the wood stock, and your explanation says delivery was in 1862. Are these numbers year of manufacture, model or what?
