Re: "SH/C" or SH/G" on Enfield wood -- how to tell

Gents,

This is the first chance I have had to go back thru my notes and description sheets of over 400 Enfields, including 26 with the markings in question.

I did find what may be an associated mark, that I did not mention before. This is a small stamped cartouche, oval, with the letters S / HC (but in one instance, the final digit appeared clearly to be a G). In one case this was stamped on the stock flat of an 1862 P53 by Joseph Wilson (Birmingham). The other two guns had this mark stamped on the barrel nocksform (1 was a P56 Rifle, 1861/Tower; the other was a P53 1861/Tower).

As I said, I believe this to be an associated mark, but I really can't say which company used it. Or maybe it was just some inspector's mark who had the same initials - who knows? Has anyone else seen this particular marking?
