Here’s an article that places the “Citadel” flag in South Carolina in 1881. I have three other articles that read about the same. This can not be the same flag that Mr. Baker got in Mobile.
The Washington Light Infantry is part of the Centennial Legion, they traveled the East coast with their Eutaw flag between 1875 & 1883. The Centennial Legion paid a visit to the South Carolina battle fields in early 1881 before going to Yorktown, Virginia.
The Public Commemoration of the re-establishment of the South Carolina Military Academy was on February 11, 1883. The flag presented by the Washington Light Infantry in 1857 to the Battalion of Citadel Cadets was the Company Colors. In the booklet I got, this flag was mentioned twice as the Standard of the Battalion of Citadel Cadets. It was a loan from Col. J. P. Thomas of the Carolina Military Institute. No mention of a red flag.
