His brigade was part of Stuart's cavalry command, but during the operations before Gettysburg Jones did not accompany Stuart on his ride around the A of P. While guarding the flank and rear of the Army of Northern Virginia, he defeated the 6th Cav.
Officers and men going South.
According to Stephen Ambrose in his history of West Point, 298 graduates served in the Confederate Army. According to E. B. Long, in "The Civil War Day by Day" 187 graduates were still serving when they resigned to go South. This would mean that over 100 had left the Army some time between their graduation and the start of the war. About 160 serving graduates from slave states remained loyal to the Union. There were also 80 or so cadets who left the Academy before graduation.
The Regular Army (see Long) had 1098 officers at the beginning of the War, 286 resigned to serve the Confederacy. A small number resigned rather than take part in a Civil War. If every officer of the Regular Army had resigned to serve the Confederacy they could have provided officers for about 30 regiments, if you ignore the staff departments. I think that would be less than half the regiments provided by Virginia alone.
Also according to Long, 26 Regular Army enlisted men were known to have joined the Confederacy. There would have been about 12,000 enlisted men based on the 1855 Table of Organization.
