Re: 15th, 19th, 23rd, & 58th Mass. Flags Captured

I have the 15th and 19th Massachusetts losing their flags at Jerusalem Plank Road on June 22nd, 1864. Both were tiny regiments and General Mahone's division captured them along with several more flags.

The 23rd Massachusetts lost their flags at Drewry's Bluff, General Kemper's Virginia brigade captured all the flags from General Heckman's "Star" Brigade.

Now the 58th Massachusetts lost flags at the Crater and during General Grant's Fifth offense. On September 30th, 1864, during the Petersburg Campaign at the battle of "Jones's Farm". Many Union regiments lost flags, including the 58th Massachusetts. The 9th Corps mostly fought in the battle and that was just two months from the huge losses they took at the "Crater". Only Eleven men manged to escape capture in the 58th Massachusetts. The 58th Mass, 51st NY and 45th PA were isolated and practically surrounded. General Martin's infantry attacked from the East, General W.H.F. Lee's cavalry from the North and West. All three of the Union regimental commanders were captured as well. The 51st NY claimed they tore their flags up while the 58th Mass and 45th PA were captured.

Overall, Wilcox, Heth and Hampton had wrecked two Union brigades and pummeling a third. This was actually BG. Archer's first battle from being captured at Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863. The 1st Tennessee actually was in hand-to-hand combat with the 20th Maine. Colonel Spear was in brigade command, he was second in command at Little Round Top, at the rank of Captain, while with the 20th Maine.

Totals: 9th Corps lost, 1,928 men, 316 in the Fifth Corps for a total of 2,256. (12 Cavalry loss). 1,400 Union soldiers missing/captured. The Second Maryland Battalion that served in General Archer's brigade had 149 men and lost 43 men. The Confederates lost around 600 men. 273 in Wilcox's brigade and 217 in Heth's brigade and 106 cavalry losses.

On a good note, I am getting everything organized state-by-state and things are looking good.

Have a good night,

Shawn Prouty
