Re: captured Confederate flag - Fisher's Hill

One of the flags captured at Fisher's Hill was WD 177. It was taken by Pvt John J. Creed, Co. D, 23rd Illinois. A New York Times article said that he had run out of ammunition and had used a rock to hit the Confederate Color-bearer in the head to capture his flag. I have been researching the identity of WD 177, and have yet to find a "smoking gun" to identify it. Circumstantial evidence indicates it may have come from either the 6th or 61st Alabama, who were in the path of Crook's charge along Fisher's Hill. Gen Early received a supply train from Richmond, via Staunton, containing, among other things, "wolven goods" the morning of the battle. The 6th Alabama had lost a flag just a month or so earlier, and the 61st was a newly formed unit. The order of battle and reconstruction of the battle show, however, that Gen Ramsuer's North Carolinians were placed directly in the path John Creed, and "Mulligan's Irish Brigade" took up the steep hill that day. Pvt John Creed, Pvt George G. Moore, Co D, 11th WVA and Pvt James Connors, Co E, 43rd NY Infty were together presented Medals of Honor at the War Department on Oct 6, 1864, and were presented by Secy of War Stanton. i have a copy of the hand receipt they signed when presented the medals Please contact me if you need any additional info.
