Good points, all. But what got me was the "by Gettysburg" date and the impression (to me, at least) that it was a distinctive flag being described, peculiar to Dearing's arty battalion. But the infantry writer may have simply meant, the "generic" arty-sized flag of his battalion. (Tks for the prompt reply -- with the earthquake the other day, Irene coming up the coast, and a "severe thunderstorm" rolling in from the mountains to our west, it's comforting to know someone else is around!!)
