Re: CS arty battalion flag
In Response To: Re: CS arty battalion flag ()

I have always found it a bit perplexing of what the 19th Mass actually captured (or picked up) Much conflicting information exists on the matter. After reviewing many different battle reports on Gettysburg it was apparent that many had copied given details of others reports into their own, thus if an item was incorrect it became echoed repeatedly.. including the captured flag listing.. On further research upon Jellison, Decastro, and Falls, plenty of discrepencies found in both their own reported heroic recants, as compared to others witnessing the account..

There was one flag that was at the time mostly unidentified since the unit id on the picket style flag was captured with the unit id already torn out. It was suspected to be the flag of the 19th Va. Interesting that this given report states that the 14th Va flag was identified captured because it was marked as such. However the 14th Va was not carrying their new picket style unit id marked flag at Gettysburg. The 14th Va was still using their previous issued ANV 2nd Bunting, which only had the Longstreet style battle honors of white cloth strip "Seven Pines" attached on it. It did not have a unit id on it. (Flag survives in private collection). After Gettysburg the 14th brought out their previous newly issued yet unused Pickett style unit id'ed flag that they continued to carry till it too was finally lost at Five Forks (MOC collection)

The position and action of the 19th Mass would place them moreso in chance to pick up stray or abandoned flags on the field... No accounts I can locate that place the 14th Va actually colliding with the 19th Mass... DeCastro claims he got lost in the shuffle and fell in with another unit instead of his own 19th Mass... other accounts dispute his claim.. The 14th struck the wall between where the 71st and 69th PV were positioned... the 72nd and 106th PV in the next line behind them.. The 19th Mass in their own account was further down the Federal left.. Not saying that the 19th Mass didnt capture or pick up some flags.. but who's they actually might have been are a bit suspect in my observation... They also indicated that they turned all the captured flags in... in the later accounting the reported identified marked flag of the 14th Va was unaccounted for... Nor does a flag show up in the War Dept flag numbered system of this reported identifed captured flag.. So makes it a bit difficult to completely confirm this claim.

Just an opinion and observation
