Re: Flags of the 5th Georgia Volunteer Infantry

Greg,

Terrific response and it seems, at least for now, the exact type of flag they carried at Chickamauga is unknowable. Two (2) minor corrections to your posting, which probably will make no difference in your conclusion. One, the Fifth Georgia Infantry was "in transit" from Knoxville, TN, but did not arrive, in time, for the battle of Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing). Two, from what I've read, the 2nd National presented to the unit was in October of 1863, after the battle of Chickamauga, but before Chattanooga.

I also don't know if this makes any difference, but after the battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River), J. K. Jackson's brigade, including the "5th" was sent back to the Bridgeport, AL area and stayed there until about thirty days before the battle of Chickamauga. Just brought that up, as the 5th was not with the bulk of the AOT during the Tullahoma campaign.
