This was a pondering thought to several previous historians on this. But no evidence of any substance to confirm the flags association. This particular vessel in question that was being built for the Confederates secretly in England. It was very similar in design as the Alabama, yet was to become the CSS Texas. It was detained by British authorities and the Confederate navy never took possession or made use of it. Post war it was sold by the Brit ship builder to Chile who called it the Pampero, then later captured by Spain who named it the Tornado. This namesake for this vessel coming well post war era.

Digging through old ship listings and registers in the archives I have located at least two other ships bearing this "Tornado" namesake. One a british ship the other a US vessel (neither military) that was existing in the 1862-65 era. But havent found any connections yet.
