There was a hand-written list compiled around 1904, for the return of captured battle flags in 1905. I have a copy of it at home, but I didn't bring it to Germany. I would guess the original is in the National Archives; I don't actually remember where I got the copy I have. But this listing was published as an addendum in Richard Rollins' book "The Returned Battle Flags" (Rank and File Publications, 1995). The list goes from No. 1 to No. 545, but there are some numbers subsequently crossed out, and at least one added, and some of those listed were Federal flags (as were some of the flags sent South in 1905 as Confederate flags).

Greg, do you know - was there any earlier listing that this one compiled of the flags held in the War Department?
