Re: Second National CS Flag at Gettysburg

Thank you for all the excellent comments. Col. Fremantle's quote, given on his way to Gettysburg with the Army of Northern Virginia was taken from Rollins book (pg. xviii) which he seems to be describing the second national flag, "the new Confederate flag adopted from this battle flag" and Rollins himself says the same thing in the preceding paragraph. Maybe I am reading too much into Fremantle's observation and that he was only commenting about a commander's flag and a not a group of regimental flags. I do agree with the comments about the inaccuracies of various period drawings and paintings. However, it just seems strange that this artist would depict a second national flag and not the battle flag. I have seen many drawings and paintings of the War and this is the only one I remember that has the second national flag as a regimental flag in battle. The drawing on Pfanz's book, Gettysburg--Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill deserves more study. Thanks again.
