Benjamin Braxton, 21 year old Farmer, born in Henry County, Alabama, enlisted as a Private in Company A, 1st Florida Cavalry, USA, December 30.1863 at Barancas, Florida for 3 years, absent on detached service recruiting at East Pass, Florida, July, 1864, detailed in February, 1865 in Refugees Camp as Carpenter, deserted March 4, 1865 at Andralusa, Alabama, recorded the end of June 1865, "deserted carrying off arms; 2 Remington Revolvers, 1 Cap & Cartridge Box, one carbine & sling & one Cap & Cartridge Box, one Sabre & Belt & Scabbard," returned October 3, 1865, mustered out November 17,1865 at Tallahassee, Florida

Charged with desertion, Specificiation: In that Benjamin Braxton, Private of Co. A, 1st Regt. Fla. Vols. Cav., did on or about the 24th day of March, 1865 while marching to meet the enemy, desert his Company & Regt. at or near Auladicty, Fla. & did remain absent until on or about the 29th day of June 1865 at which time he voluntarily gave himself up at the Marine Hospital Yard, Damaucas, Florida. Barrancas, Fla, June 30, 1865 Restored to duty September 19, 1865 without trial " . . . the fact that he was absent in desertion from on or about Mar 24 1865, to on or about Oct 3, 1865, cannot, however, be expunged." [from his record]
