5th Battalion, Florida Cavalry

5th Cavalry Battalion was organized during the summer of 1863 with eight companies. Its members were recruited in the counties of Jackson, Gadsden, Leon, Escambia, Columbia, and Wakulla. It served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and took an active part in the battles of Olustee, Gainesville, Milton, and Braddock's Farm. The unit surrendered at Tallahassee on May 10, 1865. Lieutenant Colonel George W. Scott and Major William H. Milton were in command.

Stationed at Camp Governor Milton, November-December 1863.
December 31.— Company G of Second Regiment, Florida Cav-
alry, having 152 privates, was divided by order of Colonel
[Caraway] Smith, Second Florida Cavalry Regiment, sanctioned
by Brigadier-General [Howell] Cobb, commander of District,
August 13, 1863. Seventy-two privates of Company G were
retained in regiment, the balance formed in a new company. Cap-
tain W. H. Milton, captain of Company G, Second Florida Cav-
alry Regiment, at his request, was assigned captain of new com-
pany (not to affect the date of his rank). Second Lieutenant J. C.
Booth of Company G, Second Florida Cavalry Regiment, was
promoted first lieutenant and assigned to new company and an
election ordered for senior and junior second lieutenants on
September 21, 1863, which resulted in the election of J. B.
Barnes, Senior Second Lieutenant and William P. McPherson,
Junior Second Lieutenant. The above alterations were made by
orders direct from Colonel C. Smith, Second Florida Cavalry
Regiment.

August 24.— This company was organized by division of Com-
pany D, Second Florida Cavalry, the members composing it hav-
ing been transferred from that company on August 24, 1863.
First Lieutenant D. W. Gwynn, of Company D, Second Florida
Cavalry, was promoted to captain and Brevet Second Lieutenant
E. A. Hart, also of Company D, Second Florida Cavalry, was
promoted to first lieutenant of this company on August 24, 1863.

Stationed at Camp Finegan, August 30, 1863-April 30, 1864.
August 13.— This company was organized by the division of
Company D, Florida Cavalry Regiment, in pursuance of an order
from General Howell Cobb, dated August 13, 1863 and was on
outpost duty in the vicinity of Saint Mark's, mid-Florida, from
date of its organization until February 9, 1864, when it was
ordered to east Florida, where it has been engaged ever since on
outpost duty. It was in the battle of Ocean Pond on February 20,
1864 and in the various skirmishes from there to Cedar Creek in
the vicinity of Jacksonville. The company was raised during the
suspension of the Conscript Act in General Cobb's district.

Stationed at Camp Turney, east Florida, April 30-August 31,
1864.

Company E

Stationed at west Florida, November-December 1863.

Stationed at Camp Preston, west Florida, December 31, 1864-
May 6, 1865.

Company F

Stationed at Camp Finegan, December 31, 1863-April 30, 1864.

Stationed at Camp Turney, April 30-August 31, 1864.

Company G

Stationed at Lake City, August 1863.

Stationed at Camp Cooper, September 20-30, 1863.

Stationed at outpost, [with] Army, east Florida, [February 8]-
April 30, 1864.
February 8.— Command left Camp Cooper February 8, 1864.
February 9.— Skirmished with enemy at Barber's [Ford] Febru-
ary 9, 1864, then at various places until stationed at outpost [of
the] Army, east Florida, near Camp Finegan, doing all the time
heavy scout and picket duty.
April 17.— Was attached temporarily to Fifth Florida Battalion
[of] Cavalry February 1864 and permanently April 17, 1864.
