Re: Looking for first hand accounts

A very informative book that describes the experiences of an individual with Sherman is "Soldiering the Civil War Diary Of Rice C. Bull". Sergeant Bull was in the 123rd New York Volunteer Infantry. His story includes the Battle of Chancellorsville where he was seriously wounded. He was shot through the jaw and captured. His diary reveals in great detail the kindness shown to him by the Confederates-in particularly a certain "Johnny". Unfortunately at one point the wounded are bedded down in a cultivated field (high rows and low points between). The Spring rains filled up the low points and as I recall caused much discomfort or death for wounded. Eventually he recovers and is paroled. Then its off to Tennessee, where he has an amusing night at/in the Murfreesboro, Tennessee court house (which still exists). He takes in the Atlanta Campaign and the march to the sea with Sherman. Ironically in October 1863 or thereabouts he meets the "Johnny" that had been especially kind to him at Chancerllosville-he is a prisoner of the Yankees-being in Tennessee courtesy of the Army Of Northern Virginia/Longstreet. This is only a few tidbits of a very good book/story/diary and a great amount of it is with Sherman. Contains 253 pages, from page 89 on is his Western Theater experiences."Soldiering" edited by K. Jack Bauer, copyright 1977 Presido Press, published by Presido Press 31 Pamaron Way, Novato, California 94947. Printed cloth bound in 1977, paperback in 1986. ISBN: 0-89141-263-8
