The only Confederates available to bury the dead would have been prisoners. Even if they had the time or interest, Federals had no means of identifying Confederate dead. Hastily dug trenches were the best means of disposing of them.

For what it's worth, Confederate reports refer to this fight as Lickskillet Road, or the Battle of the Poorhouse.

Since the trenches weren't marked, we can't be exactly sure where they are. However, a Confederate memorial exists at Westview Cemetery near Atlanta, the approximate location of the battlefield.
