Re: 18th GA, Co. "C" Jackson County Volunteers

Terri --

Both service files include death claim papers by the mother and widow of the soldiers mentioned. They are difficult to read, but were filed in the county of residence shortly after notice of death was received.

Both men enlisted on March 3, 1862, and died shortly afterwards. This was common for new recruits, who often became sick on the journey to join their new command.

The 18th Georgia was assigned to John B. Hood's Brigade. On the 1st of April Hood's command was in transit to the Peninsula -- on May 1st the brigade was preparing to withdraw from Yorktown. Cold Harbor was a date and place in the regiment's future, as yet unknown to officers and men.
