Re: 13th/16th Battalion Ga. Calvary

Herb --

Due to the Federal threat in the Shenandoah Valley in early June 1864, dismounted men of Vaughn's Brigade were moved northeast by rail to meet the enemy. The mounted portion of the brigade remained in eastern Tennessee. Parts of the battalion helped turn back Hunter outside Lynchburg, marched north across the Potomac to the gates of Washington with Early's command, and continued operating in the lower Shenandoah during the summer and early fall of 1864. Enough horses became available to mount Vaughn's men in late July 1864. The microfilm will list Georgians captured at places like Shepherdstown and Martinsburg in present-day West Virginia.

Vaughn's men returned to eastern Tennessee after the Battle of Fisher's Hill, Sept. 22, 1864.

For time to time, officers and men returned to Georgia for fresh horses. For most of the war, the battalion operated under Vaughn in SW Virginia and NE Tennessee.
