The Georgia State Archives probably has nothing to send you. You may wish to review my earlier post, in which I tried to say that Georgia county militiamen rendered service much like those called to state jury duty today. Names were simply selected from a list, the only difference being that every white male citizen within certain age ranges who were NOT in Confederate service were expected to appear for duty in their home county when called. Most Georgia counties never called for militia service.

A man whose name only appears on a militia register should never be submitted for membership in the SCV or UDC. If a Confederate veteran was alive to explain the difference between militia service and service in the army, you would detect an emotional tremor in his voice and probably hear some strong words used. Long after the war ended, the mere suggestion that militia service would be regarded as anything like what they did incensed aged veterans.

The name John Kirk appears with other Haralson County militiamen at the top of page 326 of the published register for 1864 Census for Re-Organizing the Georgia Militia. This book is available through Ancestry. Another John Kirk from Cobb County appearently enrolled Jan. 10, 1864, in Co. "D", 24th Georgia Cavalry Battalion. It is quite possible that your John Kirk enrolled in Co. "E", 2nd Georgia Senior Reserves, Marietta GA, Apr. 1, 1864. He gives his age as age 47 at the time of enlistment. This man deserted on June 1, 1864.
