Chris,

According to this man's Georgia Confederate Pension, he was wounded in the hip on May 3rd, 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA. He was sent to Camp Winder Confederate Hospital in Richmond and was relieved of duty, due to the severity of the wound and sent back home to Georgia.

Nathaniel BAILEY m Arminda Williams Greene Co Georgia WAR STORY

I do not mean to make anyone ill, but this is a story my grandmother told me about her grandfather, Nathaniel Walker Bailey, 1833-1917, that was married to Arminda Williams.

Nathaniel served in the war between the states (but I don't quite know where or how ... I've just started this)

Anyhooz, as the story goes, he took a bullet in the hip, but the doctor could never get it out, so he carried it for years. Sometimes it have him terrible cramps, and he had to pull over from plowing & lay in the shade until the pain would pass. His wife arminda applied a poultice to it every day.

One day, maybe 10 years after the war, he was plowing, and the old pain of this bullet came back and he went to sit in the shade & try to recover -- when he was "recovering" though, he, well, passed the bullet!

My grandmother says the story is true & that she heard it from her uncle scott, one of nathaniel's sons. I asked her where the bullet is now & she said she reckons one of her uncle scott's people has it.

thanks,
-Maggie
