Confederate authorities meanwhile, having become thoroughly alarmed for the safety of the Mississippi, on November 24, 1862, assigned General J.E. Johnston to the command of all Confederate troops between the Alleghanies and the Mississippi; the principal part of which were in Bragg’s and Pemberton’s armies. He reached Chattanooga on December 4th, and had barely time to communicate with Bragg before Jefferson Davis arrived to give his personal attention to affairs in Mississippi. After consultation with Bragg, Davis ordered Stevenson’s division and Vaughn’s brigade of McCown’s division-about 9,000 men in all to be detached from Bragg’s army and sent to Pembertons’s relief. Perhaps the most notable occasion [at Murfreesboro] was the visit of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who dined with the general officers at Bragg’s headquarters and reviewed Lieutenant General William J. Hardee’s and Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk’s corps, pronuncing the latter “the best appointed troops he had seen-well appointed and well clad.” Also, perhaps fatefully, Davis made the strategic decision, over Bragg’s protest, to send Stevenson’s division to Mississippi. During the next month President Davis himself would come west to inspect the armies of Bragg, Johnston, and Pembertson. In the end, this would result in a presidential order, over Johnston’s objection, to transfer Stevenson’s division of 8,000 men from Bragg to Pembertron. This scanty addition satisfied no one.
