Re: Info on the Civil War Hospital named Empire Ho

Bradley,

I have been thinking about this situation for the past couple of hours and I believe you may want to check his home county for his burial location. Here is my logic on it. It was January 1864 and the weather cold therefore the decomposition rate would have been less and the body could have have been moved with fewer complications.

Company A, 58th North Carolina Infantry was from Mitchell County, North Carolina and the body could have been transported by rail from Atlanta to Head of Road, North Carolina. I couldn't find the modern location on the map but it is the end of the western line of the Western North Carolina Railroad. A branch of the line runs from Salisbury to Statesville westward to "Head of Road." I am estimating this to be somewhere between Morganton and Hickory, North Carolina. They could have transported his body to this point and then transported the rest of the way by wagon. Two things could potentially made this plausible. The first was if he, his family, or friends had the means (money) to afford the coffin and transportation cost. The second would be if he had relatives that took leave during the time period which may be reflected in the compiled service records during this time period. The Army of Tennessee was in winter camp at Dalton, Georgia at the time.

Oakland Cemetery was THE cemetery at the time for Atlanta and I cannot think they would have sent his body to another cemetery. Oakland Cemetery would have been the closest and Atlanta was not the monsterous size it is today. It would have took only about twenty minutes by wagon to move his body to the cemetery. All the hospitals buried their dead there. The only reasons I can think of that could have had his body buried in another location would be if he was a Freemason the members of the fraternal order could have arranged for his burial at another location or if he had relatives in Atlanta that arranged for him to buried at another location.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,
