From "The Confederacy, A Guide to the Archives of the Government of the Confederate States of America," Henry Putney Beers, National Archives and Records Administration Washington, DC, 1986, p. 184

Empire Hospital (Macon)

Originally located at Atlanta, this hospital was moved from Macon in 1864 and located successively thereafter at Tuscumbia, Corinth, Meridian, and Opelika.

Records in Other Custody [NA] An order and letter book of the surgeon in charge (William P. Harden), Jan. 1863-Apr. 1865, was recently in the hands of a grandson (Cunningham, "Doctors in Gray,", p. 297)[See below]

"I am most grateful to Dr. R. N. Harden of Greensboro, North Carolina, for the use of an important source, Empire Hospital Order and Letter Book, January, 1863-April, 1865. Dr. Harden's grandfather, Surgeon W. P. Harden, was in charge of the Empire Hospital, originally in Atlanta, and the book contains many orders and letters received by and sent from a strategically located institution." [Drs. in Grey, H.H. Cunningham, p. 297, originally published in 1958]
