The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Info on the Civil War Hospital named Empire Ho

Thank you Gerald for all the help, the links you gave were very helpful. I myself in the past have looked through cemetery indexes of all western North Carolina counties along with many counties around Atlanta. There isn't much information on him, but i do know that he was a farmer with a small piece of land and a very big family, so I'm not sure if there would have been money to bring him back. The story handed down to my grandfather was he went to off war and died in Georgia and his grave was never found. His confederate service records showed when and where he died, so for many years even back to his family it was assumed he was buried in a unmarked grave in Atlanta. However I question burial in a unmarked grave because of the fact that he died in a hospital of fever and that someone had taken the time to document the date and location of his death. Also this was time when not much has happening in Atlanta during the war. I could understand if he had died on a battlefield and had no type of identification or if there was a major battle taken place during his death, then yes his grave probably would have been unmarked. I just don't see why they would have buried him unmarked since they knew who he was. I guess this will have to remain a mystery for now. But I do thank you Gerald, I know your a Civil War historian and not a grave hunter so I thank your for your time. However I do have one more question if you don't mind. On Leander Pyett's service papers, it said he enlisted on Dec 10, 1863 in Dalton GA, I was just wondering if it was common for soldiers to enlist in one state but then be assigned to a infantry in there home state. Once again thank you for your time.
