Re: Lt. Henry L. Jones, 34th Georgia, Co. D

Mr. Jones,

There were men from all the regiments of Cumming's Brigade that were wounded or were separated from their organizations for one reason or another at Champion's Hill (a.k.a. Baker's Creek). Some of these men served as hospital attendents. Those who managed not to get captured made their way to Jackson. These men were used for a variety of duties. Some men from the 39th Georgia escorted Federal prisoners to Richmond, Virginia during this same time period.

Vulnus Sclopeticum is Latin for gunshot wound. Stevenson's Division took severe losses during the Battle of Kolb's Farm, June 22, 1864. Your ancestor was wounded during this battle. His name appears on a casualty list published in the Atlanta Daily Intelligencer, June 29, 1864. "Company D - Lt H.L. Jones, arm fractured, amputated." The gunshot wound fractured the bone and as a result they had to amputate the arm. The list was provided to the newspaper by F.H.M. Henderson, Chaplain of the 56th Georgia.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,
