Mr. Martin-Thanks for the information you posted. This is actually more info than I have been able to gather for as you say, there is little to be found.
I am scratching my head as to why James Bice would have waited to enlist until 1864, when he would have been 19 years old. This is the cause of my confusion. His father was also named James Bice. No Jr-Sr so I have to think they had different middle names. The father would have been about 55 years old in 1864. It is possible this is the son but if not I have to keep looking. The only thing that will solve that mystery is to find a record somewhere with an age. That is why I was hoping to find an enlistment document as these often have age of enlistee.

Jame's older brother, Lafayette, was 33 years when the war began and was working at the Ettowah (Cooper) Iron works until it was burned by Sherman's Troops in 1864. This would have explained his late enlistment.

Thanks so much for contributing this information. My Mother was a Bice, descendant of Lafayette Bice. Our family appreciates your help.
