My questions relate to what happened after this last entry in the CMSR. On Ancestry.com, in U.S. Civil War Soldiers Records and Profiles, Charles is shown as having been "mustered out on July 10, 1863". On the same web site, in American Civil War Soldiers, the record shows that he was killed on July 10, 1863, at Pennsylvania. I have not been able to find any records other than these to help me understand exactly what happened. I believe this is because his Company's Major Henry Dunwoody and his brigade officer General P. J. Semmes were both killed or mortally wounded on July 2nd at Gettysburg. Who would have kept records in the chaos during and after this battle?
I am left to conjecture that Charles may have been mortally wounded at Gettysburg and left behind with the medical officers from his brigade, but he also may have been wounded and involved in the retreat and died along the way in General Imboden's wagon train through Chambersburg or Major Harman's train through Fairfield. And as a last possibility, he may have been involved in the Battle of Funkstown, Maryland, where his brigade was involved on July 10, 1863. The latter is possible only if someone made a mistake and listed him as killed in Pennsylvania, rather than Maryland.
I ask for advice about where to look for more information on Charles and what happened to him/where. I have not been able to find any medical records or regimental history on-line. I am trying to obtain a copy of Robert Krick's Gettysburg Death Roster to see if his name is included, but I wonder if there are any other sources that might be suggested.
