The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: 51st Georgia Infantry Regiment, Company A

a published newspaper casualty list for the 51st GA from the July 10, 1863
battle at Funkstown, MD should solve this mystery. My best guess would be
the Savannah Republican or one of the Columbus newspapers, available on
microfilm from the University of Georgia library.

The Digital Library of Georgia website has one Columbus newspaper online, but
not all of them.

I suspect the government clerk that extracted the data from the original muster rolls in
the early 1900s, simply confused the July 10, 1863 battle with Pennsylvania instead
of Maryland when the Compiled Service Record slip was created for this soldier.
