In Response To: Samuel Henry Fisher ()

Ms. Fisher,

I responded back to you e-mail you sent directly to me. See that e-mail for added information and questions.

It appears that Samuel H. Fisher applied for a Tennessee Confederate Veteran Indigent’s Pension twice (Pension Application numbers S3395 & S15575).

According to the 1880 Federal Census, a Samuel H. Fisher (born in 1833) lived in Cocke County, Tennessee. His wife’s name was Harriett and oldest son’s name is Lee (16 y.o.). It is annotated that Samuel’s father, mother, and himself were born in Tennessee.

He did go to Oklahoma at some point. He filed for an Oklahoma Confederate Veteran Indigent’s Pension. The information below I obtained from the index card.

Fisher, Samuel Henry. Private, Company G, 36th Georgia. Died Autumn 1917. Pension #297, Application #563. Filed May 20, 1915, Granted October 7, 1915. Address Ramona, Route 1, Washington County, Oklahoma. Address changed to Ramona, then back to Ochelata. See letter of County Judge Waddill, April 7, 1916. q/c January 1917, address changed from Ochelata to Ramona, Route 1.

I believe I found him in the 1850 Federal Census for Blount County, Tennessee living in the home of one “And” McClain (probably Andrew or Anderson but abbreviated), 44 y.o., tanner. Samuel is labeled as tanner and 18 y.o. Also living in the home is one Wilson Pleasants, 24 y.o, a Negro tanner, which I find interesting. There is a Charles Fisher family in Blount County. I don’t believe that that would be his parents because I dropped back to the 1840 Census and they did not have a male in that age category. There is a Daniel Fisher family in Knox County that is 67 y.o. I believe what you may have to do is dig into other records beyond the census records and see if his name is mentioned in a will, county court records, etc. If you can link him with a sibling and start going back following the sibling that may help you. I do believe that the Knox and Blount County areas are where you want to concentrate. Just cruising around the census records I don’t see a whole lot of Fishers so they may be related at some point.

He is in the 1860 Federal Census for Whitfield County, Georgia but the “S” looks like an “L” but it is him. His wife’s name is Harriet and he is a tanner and 26 years old. It is annotated that he was born in Tennessee here too.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,
