The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

Any Hell on Wheels fans here?

I am a big fan of the AMC show, Hell on Wheels, which is set in the summer of 1865, about the building of the trascontinental railroad.

The main character is a former Civil War soldier. I am trying to figure out what regiment he served in (fictionally, of course). This show takes creative license with a lot of things and probably should hire a good Civil War expert as consultant.

So far, the ex soldier has talked said something about "the men that rode with me". This leads me to think he was cavalry, but he may have been speaking of other officers who would have ridden from one camp or engagement to another.

Antietam/Sharpsburg battle where he and his men held of wave after wave of Federals coming at them near the bridge (Burnside Bridge, I presume) and that they only withdrew after they ran out of ammunition.

From what I can determine, these were 450 Georgia troops from Benning's brigade. He was from Meridian, Mississippi and it wasn't unheard of for a man to join a regiment from another state. Does anyone know if there were Mississippi men there at the bridge that day, holding off the federal attack?

He is shown in a Confederate officer's coat at the beginning of episode 10 -- it appears that there are three bars on the collar but this isn't very clear. There are "scrambled eggs" on the forearm of his coat. I am not knowledgeable about these symbols and do not know what rank they denote.

Thanks for your input
