I think you are correct.

I did post a few critiques of their depiction of Cullen Bohannan's war service, based on my limited knowledge of the subject.

A major theme of the show is his seeking revenge for his wife's murder in Meridian by a platoon of renegade Federals serving under Sherman.

In the show, he rides up to his farm at Meridian with the barn still smouldering. I don't know how a Confederate soldier, galloping along in broad daylight in 1864 could get into that area so brazenly that soon after the atrocity. The area would be swarming with stragglers, bummers and so forth.

It's almost like these writers (who probably aren't southern) see the war as a big "brother against brother" free for all and getting the details right doesn't matter. They watch Ken Burns and read a little Shelby Foote and become experts :)
