Robert Ellison - Believed to be a former Confederate with Company E 9th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Company E was known as the "Talbot Guards". He enlisted in the Confederate unit in summer of 1861 at Geneva, Georgia which is in Talbot County, Georgia. According to the Confederate CMSR's on page 10 an entry was made about him taking the Oath in 1864. This obviously is in error as it contradicts his other pages of Confederate Compiled Military Service Records. Some pay sites have elected to use this one entry and have erroneously made an error. His Confederate CMSR's list that he was born in Ireland and had an desirous intention of entering the Union Army. He was captured during the Gettysburg campaign. Longstreet's Corps, Hood's Division, Anderson's Brigade. He was reported to have had duty with the 3rd Maryland Cavalry and was mentioned about being at Fort Delaware. His Union 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's list him as being born in Donegal, Ireland and enlisted for service on September 18, 1863 at age 30. (Note: other pages of Union CMSR's have him as being 32 years of age) He was mustered into Company E of the 3rd Maryland Cavalry on September 23, 1863. His physical description was 5'5" in height; blue eyes; light hair; dark complexion. Prior to the War he was listed as a laborer. It would appear that he could not write as he made his signature with a X. His recruiting officer was 1st Lieutenant Andrew J. Pemberton (younger brother of the famous Confederate Vicksburg defender) Robert Ellison was arrested on December 4, 1863 after being paid and going into Baltimore, Maryland, without permission. He was shown as deserting his unit on January 21, 1864 at New Orleans, Louisiana and he returned for duty on February 16, 1864. He was mustered out of service with Company E 3rd Maryland Cavalry on September 7, 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
